HAIMES, Andrew Candle Maker, DNA Link 1 2 3

  • Born: About 1830, East Lothian, Scotland
  • Marriage (1): NEILSON, Ann on 29 December 1850 in Haddington, East Lothian, Scotland
  • Marriage (2): REID, Marion on 17 November 1865 in Haddington, East Lothian, Scotland
  • Died: 14 September 1896 at 4.30 am, 16 High Street, Haddington, East Lothian, Scotland

Cause of his death was apoplexy and uraemic convulsion over 2 days.

Other names for Andrew were HAIMES, Adden 4 and HAMES, Andrew.

  General Notes:

The 1841 census for Haddington recorded Andrew Hames [sic] living with his family in High Street. He was recorded as aged 11 years and as being born in East Lothian.

When his daughter Eleanor Haimes married in 1880, Andrew Haimes was recorded in her marriage certificate as a tobacco spinner.

Andrew's son, Charles, died in 1895, while Andrew was still living. By occupation Andrew had been a candle maker according to his son's death certificate..

When Andrew died in 1896 his death certificate recorded him as having been married to Marion Reid and previously to Annie Nelson. His recorded age was 60 years. His parents were both deceased. He had been a candlemaker by trade. 5 6

  Research Notes:

ANDREW'S YEAR OF BIRTH

When Andrew died his death certificate recorded him as age 60 years. That was in 1896. His birth year then would have been 1835 or 1836.

However Andrew married in 1850. This raises the question of whether his age at death was accurate. It may have been that Scots Law followed Roman Law.

The early 19th Century set the minimum age of marriage for girls as 12 years and boys as 14 years. So it is just possible that Andrew was born in 1835 or 1836. More evidence is needed for greater certainty.

  Medical Notes:

Robt. Howden MB CM certified the causes of death.

George Haimes, grandson of the deceased, who had been present, gave notice of Andrew's death before J. W. McKeirst, registrar, at Haddington on 14 September 1896.

Andrew married Ann NEILSON on 29 December 1850 in Haddington, East Lothian, Scotland. (Ann NEILSON was born about 1830 and died between 1863 and 1865.)

Andrew next married Marion REID on 17 November 1865 in Haddington, East Lothian, Scotland. (Marion REID was born about 1837 in Saltoun, East Lothian, Scotland 7.)
