The marriage took place after banns according to the forms of the Established Church of Scotland. The Reverend Nimmo Smith, minister at Haddington, conducted the ceremony. The witnesses were William Nisbet and Sarah Cairns.

Hugh Cairns was a ploughman by occupation. he was a single man of 22 years of age, and lived at Cairnie, Inveresk.

Eleanor Haimes was also single and aged 20 years. She worked as a domestic servant and lived at Bernard Terrace, Edinburgh. Her mother, Ann Neilson, was deceased. Her father, Andrew haimes, was living.

The marriage was registered at Haddington on 7 June 1880, Thomas Kemp being the registrar. 1 7
