General Notes:
In the Register of birth and Baptisms for the parish of Clatt in Aberdeenshire, an entry recorded the birth of Georgina Gordon, but not her christening. A blank space separates her entry from the next as if waiting to be filled with further information at a later date. The entry on page 17 reads:
"Gordon & Home (referred to at page 10) May 14 1847 George Gordon, Wright, late at Hardgate of Clatt, and Christian Home, from Mains of Tullyangus in Clatt, had a natural daughter born in the Parish of St Nicholas, Aberdeen, on the fourteenth day of May, Eighteen hundred and forty seven, named Georgina' Beside the entry was added a short note 'referred to at page 10".
When consulted this indicates the place and page where Georgina's entry should have been chronologically. In fact it was entered seven pages further on, added after the entry for 14 December 1848.
Georgina Gordon was aged 3 years when recorded by the 1851 census living at Mains of Tullyangus in Clatt with her mother Christina Home and her brother George Gordon. Her birthplace was noted as Aberdeen or St Nicholas Aberdeenshire.
In 1861 the census for the parish of Rhynie recorded a Georgina Gordon, aged 12 years, working as a domestic servant in the private house of a tailor, Alexander Milton, and his wife. This couple had six children aged from 3 months to 10 years. Georgina was recorded as unmarried and had been born in Aberdeen.
A Georgina Gordon was recorded by the census of 1871 working as a servant in the parish of Insch, Aberdeenshire. Georgina was recorded as 22 years of age and had been born in Clatt Aberdeenshire. She was a general domestic servant in the household of William Hay, a 70 year old farmer of 100 acres of land. The household, living at Denwell, also comprised the farmer's wife, Ann, his four sons and one daughter aged 19 to 35 years, and two male farm servants. The dwelling they inhabited had five windowed rooms.
The note in Georgina's son Peter's birth certificate of 1878 stated he was illegitimate. Both his mother and father signed the notice of his birth, so one must presume they were not married at the time. Georgina's occupation was recorded as 'domestic servant'.
In 1881 the census recorded a 'Gorgina Gordon' [sic], aged 33 years, who had been born in Clatt, Aberdeenshire. She was living at 14 Loanhead Terrace, Aberdeen, that is in Old Machar parish. She was a general servant (domestic), living with and, presumably, working for, Ann Innes and family. Ann Innes was a shipmaster's wife.
In the death certificate of her son Peter Home Ross, his mother's name was written first as Georgina Ross then changed to Georgina Gordon. She was noted as being a domestic servant.
The 1891 census for Edinburgh St Giles recorded Georgina Gordon as a ward assistant in Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. She was unmarried and was recorded as aged 38 years. Her birthplace was noted as Clatt Aberdeenshire.
The 1901 census also recorded Georgina Gordon. She was living at 113 Marchmont Road in Edinburgh and her age was recorded as 46 years. Her birthplace was Clatt, Aberdeenshire. She was unmarried and working as a domestic servant to Christina Dewar, aged 76 years, who was head of the household of two people and supported herself from her own means.
When Georgina died in 1933 her death certificate recorded her as a single woman aged 85 years. She was a retired lady's maid. Her usual residence was at 197 Gorgie Road Edinburgh. Both of her parents were, of course, deceased by then. 3 4 5 6 7
