General Notes:
The 1841 census for the parish of Greenock Middle, Renfrewshire, recorded Isabella Sandilands living in Longwell Close with her family. Isabella was aged 4 years, and had not been born in Renfrewshire.
In the 1851 UK census for Greenock Renfrewshire John Sandilands aged 45 years, his wife Jane aged 44 years, and their two daughters Isabella aged 13 years and Jane aged 11 years, were recorded living at 67 Main Street Cartsdyke. John was a journeyman blacksmith who had been born in Kelso. Isabella, contradicting the 1841 return, was noted as born in Greenock. She was a scholar.
In 1861 the census for Greenock, Renfrewshire, recorded Isabella Sandilands working as a servant for Archibald Chisholm, a master cooper, at 33 West Blackhall Street. Isabella was unmarried and aged 20 years. Her birthplace was recorded as Greenock.
The 1891 census for 14 Arthur Street in Greenock Renfrewshire recorded Isabella McLaren, a widow, aged 50 years, as head of the household. Two sons and two daughters aged 22 years to 11 years lived with her. All had been born in Greenock.
Isabella Sandilands died in 1921 in Greenock. Her recorded age at death was 83 years. She was recorded as being 'Isabella McLaren widow of John McLaren boilermaker'. Her parents were recorded as deceased. 2 3 4 5

Jane Hay, who had been present where her mother's death occurred, gave notice of the death before the registrar, H. Borland, at Greenock on 2 April 1921. Her address was noted as 6 Arthur Street. 2
Isabella married John McLAREN, son of John McLAREN and Janet RUSSELL, on 28 August 1868 in Lyndoch Street, Greenock, Renfrewshire, Scotland.1 (John McLAREN was born about 1810 1.)

The marriage was celebrated after banns according to the forms of the Free Church of Scotland. The minister was Mr James Stark. The witnesses were Peter McLaren and Susan McLaren.
John McLaren, a widower was 58 years of age and of 9 Cartsburn Street, Greenock. He was a boilermaker by trade. His parents were both deceased.
Isabella Sandlins, who made her X mark, was 30 years old and single. She was of the same address as the groom. Only her father's name was included in the parents' column.
The marriage was registered at Greenock on 31 August 1868, the registrar being H. MacMillan.
