  General Notes:

The 1841 census for the parish of Greenock Middle, Renfrewshire, recorded John Sandilands as the head of a household living in Longwell Close. With him lived his wife, Jane, and three children, Isabella, Jane, and Alexander. John was in the 30-34 years age range and had not been born in Renfrewshire.


In the 1851 UK census for Greenock Renfrewshire John Sandilands aged 45 years, his wife Jane aged 44 years, and their two daughters Isabella aged 13 years and Jane aged 11 years, were recorded living at 67 Main Street Cartsdyke. John was a journeyman blacksmith who had been born in Kelso. Jane was recorded as born in Glasgow.


In 1861 the UK census for Greenock recorded John and Jane Sandilands, his wife, living together at Macdougal's Land, Greenock. Jane was recorded as being 52 years old and had been born in Glasgow.


When Jean Sandilands died in 1862 her death certificate recorded her as the wife of John Sandilands blacksmith. Her recorded age at death was 54 years. No names were noted for her parents, but her father's occupation was recorded as 'miner'.


In August and November 1868 when Isabella Sandlins and Jane Sandilands married, their marriage certificates recorded, firstly in Isabella's, no name for her mother, and in Jane's, that her father was a widower.


Jane's daughter Isabella Mclaren died in 1921. Jane Hay, Isabella's married daughter, was the informant of her death. The information recorded about Isabella's father was accurate and straightforward. However, about Isabella's mother the record reads 'Isabella Sandilands MS Baker deceased'. ^{4 6 8}

John Sandilands, Jean's husband, gave notice of her death before the registrar, John Love, at Greenock on 28th April 1862. ³

Jane married John SANDILANDS, son of Alexander SANDILANDS Blacksmith and Isabel SCOTT, on 20 February 1836 in Gorbals Parish, Lanarkshire, Scotland.¹ (John SANDILANDS was born on 15 November 1805 ⁹, baptised on 29 December 1805 in Kelso, Roxburghshire, Scotland ⁹ and died 24 August 1873 at 4.40 am in 109 Henderson Street, Kinning Park, Glasgow, Scotland ⁷.). The cause of his death was diarrhoea.³
