The 1841 census for the parish of Greenock Middle, Renfrewshire, recorded Jane Sandilands living in Longwell Close with her family. Jane was aged 2 years. Her birthplace was indicated by an "E" in the first column, the second being left blank. This presumably indicates she was born in England.
In the 1851 UK census for Greenock Renfrewshire John Sandilands aged 45 years, his wife Jane aged 44 years, and their two daughters Isabella aged 13 years and Jane aged 11 years, were recorded living at 67 Main Street Cartsdyke. John was a journeyman blacksmith who had been born in Kelso. Jane's birthplace was recorded as Greenock, as in her sister's case contradicting the 1841 census entry. She was a scholar.
John Sandilands was recorded as 64 years old and had been born in Kelso, according to the 1871 census for Govan Church parish, Lanarkshire. He was a widower living with his daughter and son in law, Frank Howit, who was the head of the household. They lived at 109 Henderson Street. Jane Howit was noted as being 31 years old and born in Greenock, Renfrewshire.
Jane Howit, John's daughter who had been present where her father died, gave notice of her father's death before the registrar, Thomas Steel, at Govan on 8 September 1873. 4

HENDERSON STREET
This street is now called Howwood Street in the Kinning Park area of Glasgow, not far from Scotland Street. It is not be confused with the present Henderson Street which is situated in the Maryhill district of Glasgow.
Jane married Frank HOWIT, son of John HOWIT and Jane HOWIE, on 26 November 1868 in 17 Park Terrace, Anderston, Glasgow, Scotland.1 (Frank HOWIT was born about 1840 in Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland 3.)
Marriage Notes:
The marriage took place after banns according to the forms of the Church of Scotland. The minister was Ninian Miller. The witnesses were D.G.R. Mann and Wyllie Guild.
Frank Howit (indexed as Hewit by the GRO Edinburgh) was a single man of 27 years who was a journeyman engineer pattern maker. He lived at 217 Eglinton Street Glasgow.
Jane Sandilands was a single woman working as a domestic servant. She lived at 17 Park Terrace Glasgow and was 27 years old. Her mother was deceased.
The marriage was registered on 27 November 1868 at Glasgow, Thomas Pollok being the registrar. 3
