General Notes:
Old Parish Registers Kelso parish Roxburghshire Baptisms
"1805 29 December John Sandilands Alexander Sandilands and Isabel Scott his spouse had a son named John born 15 November 1805 and baptized 29 December 1805 wit. William Scott and Jno Sandilands"
The 1841 census for the parish of Greenock Middle, Renfrewshire, recorded John Sandilands as the (presumed) head of a household living in Longwell Close. With him lived his wife, Jane, and three children, Isabella, Jane, and Alexander. John was in the 30-34 years age range and had not been born in Renfrewshire. By occupation he was a journeyman smith.
In the 1851 UK census for Greenock Renfrewshire John Sandilands aged 45 years, his wife Jane aged 44 years, and their two daughters Isabella aged 13 years and Jane aged 11 years, were recorded living at 67 Main Street Cartsdyke. John was a journeyman blacksmith who had been born in Kelso.
In 1861 the UK census for Greenock recorded John and Jane Sandilands, his wife, living together at Macdougal's Land, Greenock. He was recorded as 54 years old and worked as a blacksmith. His birthplace was Kelso.
John Sandilands gave notice of his wife Jean's death before the registrar, John Love, at Greenock on 28th April 1862.
John Sandilands was recorded as a journeyman blacksmith in the marriage certificate of his daughter Jane in 1868. He was a widower then.
John Sandilands was recorded as 64 years old and had been born in Kelso, according to the 1871 census for Govan Church parish, Lanarkshire. He was a widower living with his daughter and son in law, Frank Howit, who was the head of the household. They lived at 109 Henderson Street. John's occupation was still recorded as blacksmith.
In his death certificate of 1873 John Sandilands was recorded as a journeyman blacksmith and widower of Jane Simon. His recorded age at death was 67 years. Both of his parents were deceased. The names of John's parents were given by his daughter, Jane, as 'John Sandilands master blacksmith deceased' and 'Jane Sandilands maiden surname Campbell deceased'. No marriage between such a couple has been found inside or outside of Scotland. Nor have any children been found born to this couple. However a Sandilands male did father a child born exactly 67 years before John's death in Kelso Roxburghshire, Alexander Sandilands married to Isabella Scott. These two first names were reflected in the naming of John's children. Jane Howit may have unknowingly given inaccurate information about her father's parentage, drawing on the names of a previous generation, grandparents of her father rather than parents, and possibly influenced by the fact that John and Jane were the names of her own parents.
In the death certificate of his daughter, Isabella McLaren, in 1921, John Sandilands was recorded as a 'blacksmith deceased'. 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
