John McCallum was the elder of the two sons recorded by the 1861 census living with their parents in Stories Land Strathbungo. He was aged 10 years and had been born in Dalry Ayrshire. He was a scholar.
The 1881 census for Govan parish, Lanarkshire recorded John McCallum as head of the household living at 164 Sandyfaulds Street. John lived with his wife and four children aged 10 years to 2 years. John was recorded as 30 years of age and born in Ayr. He worked as a house painter. John's mother Agnes, remarried by 1881 to David Colquhoun, also lived at 164 Sandyfaulds Street. 2 3
John married Martha DAVIS, daughter of Joseph DAVIS and Eliza BOW, on 25 February 1870 in Hutchesontown Relief Church, Glasgow, Scotland.1 (Martha DAVIS was born on 6 January 1847 1 3 4 and was baptised on 17 August 1851 in St Mary, Disley, Cheshire, England 4.)
Marriage Notes:
The marriage took place after banns according to the forms of the Church of Scotland. Robert K. Monteath, minister of Hutchesontown Church, officiated. Christopher Wood and John Davies were witnesses.
John McCallum was an apprentice housepainter of 19 years of age. He was unmarried.
Martha Davis was a cotton powerloom weaver. She too was unmarried and was 18 years old. Her address was noted as 19 Commercial Road G1.
The marriage was registered on 28 February 1870 at Glasgow, A.K. Michill being the registrar. 1
