   Another name for John was McCALLUM, James.2

  General Notes:

In the 1851 census John and Agnes McCallum and their daughter, also Agnes, were recorded living at Drakemire in Dalry, Ayrshire. John was recorded as 25 years of age and had been born in Fort William, Invernesshire. He worked as a labourer.

John McCallum was the head of a household living at Stories Land Strathbungo, south of Glasgow, as recorded by the 1861 census for Govan parish. With John lived his wife and two sons, John and Samuel. John was recorded as 35 years of age and as having been born in Fort William Invernesshire. He worked as an agricultural labourer.

In 1870 John's son, also John McCallum married. In the marriage certificate John McCallum, father of the groom, was recorded as 'railway plate layer'.

The census of 1871 for Bridgeton in Glasgow recorded John and Agnes McCallum and their son Samuel. They were living at 32 Orr Street Calton. John McCallum was working as a mason's labourer. His age was recorded as 40 years and his birthplace as Ayrshire. [This last piece of information does not accord with the information about John's birthplace from other census years and other sources. It may have been an error on the enumerator's part or on the part of the informant.]

John McCallum died in 1873. His death certificate recorded that he was a 'pauper formerly a surfaceman married to Agnes McGeorge'. His recorded age at death was noted as 46 years and his former residence as 24 South Wellington Street G1. There was no parental information noted in the certificate.

John's son Samuel died in 1873 just a few months after John himself died. In Samuel's death certificate John was recorded as 'road surfaceman deceased'.

In Agnes George's death certificate of 1910, John McCallum was recorded as her first husband. John was a railway platelayer, according to this source. 1 3 4 5 6 7 8

W. A. Liddell, surgeon, certified the causes of John's death.

James Hume, the Governor's Assistant at Govan Poorhouse Merryflats, gave notice of John's death before the registrar, Andrew Marshall, at Govan on June 5 1873. 4


John married Agnes GEORGE, daughter of Samuel GEORGE (DNA Linked) and Rebecca REID (DNA Linked), on 13 October 1849 in Stewarton, Ayrshire, Scotland. (Agnes GEORGE was born in 1828 in Crookedholm, Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Scotland 1 9 10 11 12 and died 28 August 1910 at 1.00 am in Old Monkland Poorhouse, Coatbridge, Lanarkshire, Scotland 10.). The cause of her death was senile debility - in hospital 23 days.4
