Mary Quigley was born in Galston in 1960. Her father Peter Quigley was the informant of her birth before the registrar at Galston on 27 July 1860, but was not present where the birth took place. He was a coalminer, probably employed at Holmes Colliery in Galston parish Ayrshire, which the certificate notes as the location of Mary's birth. No baptismal record has as yet been found for Mary.

Mary was the youngest child recorded in her family in the 1861 census. The family were living at Old Rome, near Dundonald, and Mary was noted as 5 months of age. Her birthplace was recorded as Galston.

The 1871 census recorded Mary Tweedley, aged 10 years, living with her parents and sister and brothers in Knowehead Rows, Galston, the Ayrshire town where she had been born. She was a scholar.

Mary was not listed in her family's 1881 census entry in Dalziel Parish, Lanarkshire. She was, however, recorded in the 1881 census for England. She was living at 13 Netley Street, St Pancras, London. She was aged 20 years. With her lived her husband, W. G. Allen, born in the same town, aged 25 years, and working as a railway servant, and also her son, W. S. Allen aged 10 months, also born in St Pancras Middlesex.
Note:The transcriber mistakenly noted W.S. for W.G.

Mary Allan registered her daughter Maggie George Allan's birth in Edinburgh on 27 November 1883, and made her X mark.

In 1891 the census recorded Mary Alan, a widow and an invalid, living in a dwelling with one windowed room at 95 Muir Street with her son, William aged 10 years, and her daughter Margaret, aged 7 years. Mary was recorded as 30 years of age and born in Galston, Ayrshire. William had been born in London and Margaret in Edinburgh. Both children were at school.

The census of 1901 recorded Mary Allen living at 95 Muir Street Hamilton with her children: Margaret, aged 17 years, and William G., aged 20 years. Mary's recorded age was 40 years. Her birthplace was noted as Ayr, Ayrshire.

In 1911 Mary Allan was living alone at 21 Barrack Street, Hamilton. She was a widow and had been born in Galston, Ayrshire.

Mary died in 1918. Her death certificate recorded that 'Mary Allan married to William Allan Railway Lampman died 6 December 1918. Found dead on floor at 9.30 pm. Last seen alive December 3 about 11 pm at 21 Barrack Street Hamilton aged 59'. Both of her parents were then deceased.
Note: as early as the 1891 census Mary was listed as a widow. The phrasing of her death certificate suggests he husband was still living. 3 4 7 8 13 14 15 16 17

  Research Notes:

THANK YOU

Mary Quigley's descendant, Irene Smith, has very generously offered to share her own research and information about Mary and her family.

Thanks too to Jayne Knox, whose husband is a descendant of Mary Quigley/Tweedley, without whose family tree the information published in Patrick's People concerning this family line would be so much poorer.
