General Notes:
Roman Catholic Records St Mirin's Parish Paisley Baptisms
"At Paisley this thirty first day of March 1822 I the undersigned baptised Elizabeth born of the fifth day of Feby 1822 lawful daughter of James Wade and Ann Quigly. The sponsors were James Maxwell and Agnes Wade. (signed) William Caven"
In the census of 1841 a young woman called Elisabeth Wade, a milliner, aged in the 15-20 years age range, was recorded living in a household at West College Street, Glasgow, off the High Street. She had been born in Scotland, but not Lanarkshire, the county where the census was being taken. The other three people in the household were of differing surnames and none older than 25 years of age.
In 1851 a young woman of 30 years of age was living with the Callaghan family as a lodger at 91 New Vennel in Glasgow College parish. She was noted as born in Glasgow and her occupation was 'cotton waste tease'. The 'Glasgow' place of birth entry could simply have been given as 'born here' since others in the entry were born in Ireland.
In 1861 the census for Glasgow College or Blackfriars parish, recorded Elizabeth and Robert McKenzie, husband and wife, living at 78 Old Vennell in the High Church district of Glasgow. Elizabeth was recorded as 28 years of age. Her birthplace was noted as Paisley, Renfrewshire. She was a seamstress by occupation.
Note: In their marriage certificate Elizabeth's age was recorded as 24 years (1857), three years older than her husband. The age gap between them seems to have been greater than that but for some time afterwards Elizabeth calculates her age from a base of 1833 instead of 1822.
Elizabeth McKenzie gave notice of her husband Robert's death before the registrar, Peter Ferguson, at Glasgow on 6 February 1866 and made her X mark.
Elizabeth McKenzie, Ann's daughter, was the informant of Ann Wade's death. She made her X mark before the registrar, Alexander Smith, at Rothesay on 12 August 1874.
In 1881 Elizabeth Mackenzie and Maryann Wade were recorded by the census living in Polnoon Street, Eaglesham, Renfrewshire. Both were born in Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland. Maryann was recorded as aged 42 years and Elizabeth as 40. Elizabeth was the head of the household and her occupation was that of hawker. Maryann's relationship to her was that of 'boarder' and she was a housekeeper by occupation. Elizabeth was a widow and Maryann was unmarried. They were living in a dwelling that had only one room that was windowed.
Note: Unless the first Elizabeth died and another child, born later, was named Elizabeth, then Elizabeth was at this time actually not 40 years old but considerably older, nearer 60 years of age.
Elizabeth McKenzie was recorded by the 1891 UK census for Eaglesham, Renfrewshire, living at 2 Polnoon Street , in a dwelling with two windowed rooms, with her sister Margaret [sic] Wade. Elizabeth was a hawker by occupation and a widow by status. She was 70 years old and had been born in Paisley, Renfrewshire.
The 1901 census for Eaglesham recorded Elizabeth McKenzie living in the household at 2 Polnoon Street of which her sister Mary Ann was recorded as head, Elizabeth was noted as being a widow, aged 68 years and born in Paisley. Like her sister she was inscribed as having formerly been a cotton weaver.
When Elizabeth died in 1905 her age was recorded as 76 years. She was described as a 'hawker' and widow of John [sic] McKenzie millworker'. Both of her parents were dead. 3 4 5 6 7 8
Medical Notes:
John Dodd MB CM of Eaglesham certified the causes of Elizabeth's death.
A neighbour of Elizabeth's, Catherine Smith, gave notice before the registrar at Eaglesham, William Browning, on 20 December 1905 and made her X mark.
Elizabeth married Robert McKENZIE, son of Lachlan McKENZIE and Mary ALLAN, on 30 March 1857 in 18 Great Hamilton Street, Calton, Glasgow, Scotland.1 (Robert McKENZIE was born in 1836 in Glasgow, Scotland 3 and died 4 February 1866 at 5.20 am in 2 Muse Lane, Duke Street, Glasgow, Scotland 3 6.). The cause of his death was poisoned (by what appears to have been) muriatic acid.
Marriage Notes:
The marriage after banns was performed according to the forms of the Church of Scotland by the minister of Calton, Allan Maclean.
Robert McKenzie was aged 21 years. He was resident at 55 High Street, Glasgow, and was a fishing rod maker. He was unmarried. His father was deceased.
Elizabeth Wade, who made her X mark, was aged 24 years and also of 55 High Street. She was unmarried. Her father was deceased.
The witnesses were John Downie and John Spence. The marriage was registered on 31 March 1857, R.C. Hamilton registrar.
