General Notes:
Old Parish Register Newton On Ayr Parish Ayrshire Baptisms 1817
"AUG 10th GEORGE Samuel George labourer and Rebecca Reid his wife both belonging to the Church had a son baptized. Born the 12th day of July last and named Moses."
Moses George was recorded in the 1841 census in Mauchline parish, Ayrshire, at Rodinghead. He was employed as an agricultural labourer aged in the 20 years age group, that is between 20 and 24 years old. Three others, presumably fellow workers were recorded with him: James Anderson, in the 25 years age group, also an agricultural labourer; Helen Hodge, in the 20 years age group, a farm servant; and Jane Morton aged 15 years, a farm servant like Helen. These three were born in Ayrshire.
Moses, however, had a special birth entry: 1 no entry was made at all in the first column which requires a yes/no answer about whether the individual was born in the county where the census was taken
2 in the second column, usually reserved for the name of a country, if the birth was not in Scotland, the entry for Moses was "Born in sea".
The 1851 census for Kilmarnock parish recorded Moses George, his wife, Mary, and their son, John, living at Braefoot Scots Lane. Moses was 33 years of age and had been born in Newton, Ayrshire. He was an engine keeper.
Mary George, wife of Moses, remarried in June 1854, before statutory reporting of deaths. We know therefore that Moses George was dead by then.
Moses was dead when his son Samuel married at Newmains, Lanarkshire in 1872. He was recorded in the marriage certificate as a labourer.
In 1886 Moses George was recorded as having been an engineman, in the death certificate of his wife, Mary.
When his son, Samuel, died in 1924, Moses George was recorded in his death certificate as 'Moses George engine driver deceased'. 2 3 4 5
Moses married Mary McLEAN on 17 April 1847 in Dalry Parish, Ayrshire, Scotland.1 (Mary McLEAN was born in 1819 in Campbeltown, Argyllshire, Scotland 4 5 6 7 and died 3 June 1886 at 7.30 am in Robert's Wynd, Falkirk, Stirlingshire, Scotland 5.).
