General Notes:
Montgomery Stevens [sic] was recorded living with his new wife Rebeca [sic] in the 1841 census in Crooked Holm, near her parents, in the parish of Kilmarnock, Ayrshire. He was in the 20 to 24 years age range and was an agricultural labourer. Both were born in Scotland.
In 1851 the census for Riccarton, Ayrshire, recorded Montgomery, his wife Mary, six children, and his brother Gilmour living in the village of Hurlford at Portland Row. Montgomery Steven was a coal miner aged 30 years. The census recorded that he was born in Galston. Some of his children were born before 1849, the year he and Mary Ferguson married. One child was Elizebeth Brown aged 3 years, who, at a guess, may have been a child of Gilmour Steven and Margaret Brown before their marriage.
When his daughter, Rebecca, was married in 1861, Montgomery was recorded as a coal miner.
In the 1871 census Montgomery Steven was recorded as married to his second wife Mary. He was aged 52 years and resided at 18 Titchfield Street, Galston, next to two Spirit Merchants and their families. He was described as a coal miner and as having been born in Galston, Kilmarnock. The house the family lived in had two windowed rooms.
Montgomery Steven was recorded in the census for Galston parish taken on the 5 April 1891. His age was given as 72 years. He was married to Catherine, was unemployed, and lived in a home with two windowed rooms at 20 Titchfield Street Galston. With him resided his wife and her two sons and a daughter.
Montgomery Steven died in 1897 at Galston. His death certificate recorded him as 'coal miner, widower of Mary Ferguson deceased, married to Cathrine Andrews'. No mention was made of his first wife Rebecca George. His recorded age at death was 76 years. His parents were deceased. 4 6 7 8
Research Notes:
GALSTON
Galston was in the parish of Kilmarnock.
Medical Notes:
James Alexander MS certified the causes of death.
Andrew Andrews, stepson of the deceased, gave notice of his death before the registrar, Thomas White, at Galston on 19 August 1897. 4
Montgomery married Rebecca GEORGE, daughter of Samuel GEORGE (DNA Linked) and Rebecca REID (DNA Linked), on 1 January 1841 in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Scotland.1 (Rebecca GEORGE was born on 12 August 1821, baptised 19th August 1821 in Newton on Ayr, Ayrshire, Scotland and died in 1847-1849.)
Marriage Notes:
Two dates and venues for this couple are given in the OPR, the earlier probably being the start of the proclamations of banns and the latter the marriage date after the banns were called on three Sabbaths: -13 Dec 1840 at Galston and -1 Jan 1841 at Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Scotland.
The Galston parish Marriages register reads: "13 DEC 1840 STEVEN Montgomery Steven in this parish and Rebecca George Kilmarnock Low Church parish (all 3 sabbaths)." 1
Montgomery next married Mary FERGUSON on 28 April 1849 in Riccarton parish, Ayrshire, Scotland. (Mary FERGUSON was born in 1824 in Galston, Ayrshire, Scotland.)
Marriage Notes:
The proclamations of intended marriage between Montgomery Steven and Mary Ferguson were made in 1849. The OPR for Riccarton, Ayrshire for 28th April 1849 reads:
"Montgomery Steven and Mary Ferguson both in this parish, entered their names, were regularly proclaimed in three Sabbaths".
Unlike other entries, this one does not give the details of the marriage itself, and the phrase 'in this parish' rather than 'of this parish' suggests they were not members of the Established Church, even though their banns had to be proclaimed in it.
Montgomery Steven, according to the 1851 census, had a number of children born before this date. These have been 'attributed' to Rebecca George.
Montgomery next married Catherine ANDREWS, daughter of William ANDREWS and Catherine CARROL, on 30 October 1885 in The Manse, Galston, Ayrshire, Scotland. (Catherine ANDREWS was born about 1845 in Tarbolton, Ayrshire, Scotland.)
Marriage Notes:
The marriage was conducted, after banns, according to the forms of the Church of Scotland. The minister was John Brown. The witnesses were William McClelland and Mary Dunn.
Montgomery Steven, who made his X mark, was a widower of 65 years. His address was Titchfield Street, Galston. He was a coal miner. Both of his parents were deceased.
Catherine Andrews was an unmarried woman of 40 years. She was an outdoor worker. her address was given as Gromgar (? unclear) Row, Kilmarnock. Both of her parents were deceased too.
The marriage was registered at Galston on 31 October 1885, James C. Hutchison being the registrar.
