FERGUSON, Mary ¹

   Another name for Mary was STEVEN.

  General Notes:

The 1851 census for Riccarton recorded Mary living with her husband, six children, and her brother in law, in the village of Hurlford. Her age was recorded as 26 years and her birth place as Kilmarnock.

Mary was recorded with her husband and family in the 1871 census living at 18 Titchfield Street, Galston. Six of their children were living with them ranging in age from 18 years old to 9 months. Mary herself was aged 46 years and was born in Galston, in the parish of Kilmarnock. ²

Mary married Montgomery STEVEN, son of Montgomery STEVEN and Elizabeth CONNAL, on 28 April 1849 in Riccarton parish, Ayrshire, Scotland. (Montgomery STEVEN was born in 1819 in Galston, Ayrshire, Scotland and died 19 August 1897 at 10.00 am in Maxwood Rows, Galston, Ayrshire, Scotland.). The cause of his death was cardiac degeneration and anasarca of uncertain duration.

  Marriage Notes:

The proclamations of intended marriage between Montgomery Steven and Mary Ferguson were made in 1849. The OPR for Riccarton, Ayrshire for 28th April 1849 reads:

"Montgomery Steven and Mary Ferguson both in this parish, entered their names, were regularly proclaimed in three Sabbaths".

Unlike other entries, this one does not give the details of the marriage itself, and the phrase 'in this parish' rather than 'of this parish' suggests they were not members of the Established Church, even though their banns had to be proclaimed in it.

Montgomery Steven, according to the 1851 census, had a number of children born before this date. These have been 'attributed' to Rebecca George.
