In the christening entry for Jean William in 1846 in Strathdon Parish, her father's name is noted as Peter William and her mother's as Mary Elizabeth Smith. There seems very little doubt this is an administrative error.

In 1851 the census for Strathdon Parish in Aberdeenshire recorded Jane William living at Glenkindie with her family, including her maternal grandmother. Jane was recorded as 4 years of age. She was a scholar and had been born in the parish where she lived. 1
