The 1841 census for the parish of Strathdon, Aberdeenshire, recorded James William, with, presumably, his wife and family living at Bridgend of Glenkindie. The household consisted of James, his wife, Mary, three of their children, and Mary's mother Elspet McHardy. James was aged 41 years and had been born in Aberdeenshire. He worked as an agricultural labourer.

In 1851 the census for Strathdon Parish in Aberdeenshire recorded James William as head of a household of seven people, including himself, living at Glenkindie. In the household were James, his wife Mary, their four children, and Mary's mother Elspet McHardy. James was recorded as 50 years of age. He worked as an overseer. He had been born in Glenbucket parish.
