The 1841 census for the parish of Strathdon, Aberdeenshire, recorded Elspeth McHardy living with her daughter, Mary, and family at Bridgend of Glenkindie. Elspeth was 65 years old and had been born in Aberdeenshire. She was recorded as being of independent means.

In 1851 the census for Strathdon Parish in Aberdeenshire recorded Elspet McHardy living at Glenkindie with her daughter, Mary, and her family. Elspet used her maiden name as a widow, as many Scots women did by tradition. She was recorded as 74 years of age. Her occupation was noted as 'living with the family'. She had been born in the parish where she lived.

Elspet married William SMITH. (William SMITH was born about 1775.)
