"Hemes George, Shoemaker, and Isabel Muat, had a Daughter born 4th. and baptized 26th. Septr. name Jean Wit. Thomas and George Muat."

In 1841 the census for St John's Haddington East Lothian recorded Jean Haimes living in Church Street with her mother and three brothers. Jean was placed in the 15-19 years age category and had been born in the county in which she was living. No occupation was entered for her.

The 1851 census for Haddington recorded Thomas and Jane Spence and their two daughters, Isabella, aged 3 years, and Margaret,aged 1 year, living in High Street. Thomas, aged 33 years and born in Dunbar, was a postman by occupation. Jane was 26 years old and recorded as born in Haddington.

In her death certificate of 1891 Jane Spence was recorded as the widow of Thomas Spence, postman. 2 3 4 7


Jean married Thomas SPENCE on 24 May 1846 in Haddington, East Lothian, Scotland.1 (Thomas SPENCE was born on 4 April 1817 in Dunbar, East Lothian, Scotland 1 6 7 and died on 5 March 1887 1.)
