No baptism record has been found for Thomas Spence, although there are baptism records in the Dunbar parish registers for other-named children of Thomas Spence and Margaret Black before and after 1817.

In 1841 Thomas Spence, aged 24 years, was recorded as a hawker iving in Poldrate in Haddington parish, the parish of his birth according to this census return.

The 1861 census for Haddington recorded the Spence family living on the South Side of High Street:
Thomas Spence, aged 44, Jane Spence, 37, and their children, Isabella, 13, Mary, 11, Janet, 9, Jane, 6, and Thomas, 3 years. All were recorded as born in Haddington, except the father Thomas, who had been born in Dunbar. Thomas was recorded as a letter carrier by occupation.

In 1871 Thomas and Jane Spence were living in High Street Haddington, according to the census of that year, with their children Thomas, Hellen and Margaret, and Jane's nephew James Haimes, aged 6 years, probably the son of Jane's brother Charles. Thomas was again recorded as a letter carrier.

Thomas, Jame, Helen and Mary A Spence were living at 16 Cairns Close when recorded by the 1881 census for Haddington. With them lived Janet Skinner, Jane's sister, aged 80 years.

Thomas Spence, Janet Skinner's brother in law who had been present where her death occurred, was the informant of her death in Haddington in 1885.

Thomas married Jean HAIMES (DNA Link), daughter of George HAIMES Shoemaker, DNA Linked and Isabell MOWAT DNA Linked, on 24 May 1846 in Haddington parish, East Lothian, Scotland. (Jean HAIMES (DNA Link) was born on 4 September 1824 in Haddington parish, East Lothian, Scotland 11, baptised on 26 September 1824 in Haddington parish, East Lothian, Scotland 11 and died on 30 June 1891 in No 3 Hardgate, Haddington, East Lothian, Scotland 9.). The cause of her death was carcinoma of the liver.
