Thomas Sandilands was recorded by the 1841 census living at 6 Newport Street, Edinburgh, with four (possible) siblings, an older woman, Isabella Sandilands, and a young child of 2 years, Alexander Nisbet. His birth county was Midlothian and his age in the 15-19 years age range. By occupation he was a mason apprentice.

The 1860 US Federal Census for Washington City, District of Columbia (DC), recorded, as 'Free Inhabitants', Thomas Sandeland, his wife Euphimia E. Sandeland, and their two daughters Isabella and Mary Sandeland, living at number 175, 7th Ward Washington City. Thomas was recorded as 35 years of age and by occupation a stone cutter. His birthplace was Scotland. The value of real estate owned by him was 2000 dollars, and his personal estate was valued at 100 dollars.

In 1870 the US Federal census for Iowa recorded a man called 'Thomas Sunderland', who, from his family context and other details, is this Thomas Sandilands. The census records his as 46 years old and born in Scotland GB. His parent were both foreign born. He is a farmer by occupation and owns 5000 dollars in real estate and 1140 dollars in personal estate. He is a US citizen. With him live his wife Ephemie, his daughters Isabella and Mary, and a son, Thomas.

Thomas Sandilands died in 1876 and was buried in Oakland Cemetery, Manchester, Delaware County, Iowa, USA. 4 5


Thomas married Euphemia SMITH, daughter of David SMITH and Unknown, on 23 March 1852 in Edinburgh parish, Edinburgh, Scotland.1 (Euphemia SMITH was born in February 1824 in Scotland 2 4 and died on 14 July 1898 in Delaware County, Iowa, USA 2.)
