The 1860 US Federal Census for Washington City, District of Columbia (DC), recorded, as 'Free Inhabitants', Thomas Sandeland, his wife Euphimia E. Sandeland, and their two daughters Isabella and Mary Sandeland, living at number 175, 7th Ward Washington City. Mary Sandeland was recorded as 2 years old and born in "West-Col", as were various other people in the immediate vicinity. It may simply be "west Columbia".

Mary Sunderland [sic] was recorded by the 1870 US Census living with her parents and her younger brother and older sister in Adams Township, Delaware County. Aged 12 years she was recorded as being at school. She had been born in Washington DC, and her parents were foreign born. She had attended school within the year. ^{2 3}

Mary married James FALCONER, son of Charles Lowe FALCONER and Rebecca PIERCE, in 1891.¹ (James FALCONER was born on 4 April 1858 in Adams Township, Delaware County, Iowa, USA ¹ and died on 16 January 1930 in Sac County, Iowa, USA ¹.)
