James married Margaret OGILVY, daughter of Sir Alexander OGILVY of Auchterhouse and Unknown, on 27 March 1459.1 (Margaret OGILVY was born about 1443.)

"Before 1 March 1466 he married Margaret, the only child of Sir Alexander Ogilvie of Auchterhouse, and got with her the Castle of Banff, the baronies of Strathalvah and Down in the county of Banff, and various other lands in the counties of Banff, Aberdeen, and Forfar....The Earl, apparently on his marriage, became Sheriff of Forfar, but he resigned the office in 1466.... .... By his wife he had only one son, Alexander, who succeeded him." (pages 266 and 267)
