In 1871 the census for Liberton Midlothian recorded John Curran living with his family at Old Dalkeith Road, Little France. John had been born in Liberton and was recorded as 4 years of age.

The 1881 census recorded John Cairns living in his parents' home at Cairnie Hinds House, Inveresk. He was an agricultural labourer aged 14 years and had been born in Liberton near Edinburgh.

John Cairns was head of the household living at 30 Henderson Row, Portobello in the civil parish of Duddingston, as recorded by the 1891 census. With him lived a wife, daughter and son. John was recorded as age 23 years and had been born in Liberton, Midlothian. He was employed as a goods guard with the North British Railway.

In 1901 the census for Penicuik Midlothian recorded John Cairns, his wife and his six children living at 31 John Street in a dwelling that had two windowed rooms. He worked as a locomotive shunter in a paper mill. John's age was recorded as 33 years and his birthplace as Liberton, Midlothian.

When John Cairns died in 1949, his death certificate recorded him as a retired papermill worker who was married to Marjory Dewar. His recorded age at death was 82 years. His parents were both dead. 2 3 4 5 6

Marjory Cairns, John's daughter, who had been present where the death occurred, gave notice of her father's death before the registrar, Isbel Aikman, at Penicuik on 6 June 1949. 6

John Cairns was a railway goods guard by occupation living at 7 Mentone Avenue, Portobello. He was single and 20 years of age.

Marjory Dewar was a domestic servant living at Monkton Hall, North Esk, Musselburgh. She was 21 years old and single. Her parents, John Dewar, a farm servant, and Margaret Ramsay, were living.

The marriage was registered at Portobello on 6 February 1888, the registrar being William Baxendine. 8 9
