"On 24th March 1565/6, at Edinburgh, a remission was given to Gilbert Lawder of Balbardies, Richard Lawder of that Ilk, William Lawder, brother to the said Gilbert[5Being William Lauder, merchant in Kelso, who died 31 Dec 1598.], and Robert Lawder their servant, for the slaughter of George Wedderet, burgess in Lauder, committed in the month of September 1565, and for all action and crime etc; And bound over for the space of nineteen years hereafter under revocation.[6Beveridge, James, M.A., and Donaldson, Gordon, D.Litt., editors, Register of the Privy Seal of Scotland, vol.v, 1556-1567, Edinburgh, 1957, number 2715, p.74.]

It is recorded on 22nd February 1572, that the Kers of Ferniehirst had massed together a force of rebels along with 'thieves and broken men' of the Borders. A muster was called, at Jedburgh, of 'fencible persons' in certain southern counties for defence and preservation of the burgh and a general band was subsequently subscribed to by numerous lairds and others amongst whom was Gilbert Lauder of Whitslaid.[7Burton, John Hill, LL.D., editor, The Register of the Privy Council of Scotland, vol.ii, H.M. Gilbert married Elizabeth LAUDER, daughter of Sir Alexander LAUDER of Haltoun and Janet BORTHWICK, by 27 January 1556 (charter).1 (Elizabeth LAUDER was born about 1535 and died after 25 December 1599 1.)


  Marriage Notes:

"In a transcript of a charter (dated 27th January 1556 is a Letter of Tack [lease] whereby William Lauder of Haltoun in implementation of a Contract of Marriage between him and his sister-german [this] Elizabeth Lauder on the one part, and Gilbert Lauder of Balbardy with consent of his curators on the other part, etc.[1National Records of Scotland, Edinburgh, ref: RH6/1665.]

Elizabeth (called Isobell) is mentioned as her husband's 'relict' in a Privy Council entry dated 31st May 1591[2Masson, David, LL.D., editor, The Register of the Privy Council of Scotland, vol.iv, H.M.
