  General Notes:

"This peerage of Aboyne was first created in 1626 in favour of John, the fifth son of the 1st Marquis of Huntly, and his heirs male. John Gordon, Viscount Aboyne and Melgum, was burnt at Frendraught Tower in 1630, leaving issue by his wife Sophia Hay, 5th daughter of Francis, Earl of Errol, an only daughter, so the peerage became extinct. Two years later his elder brother George, Lord Gordon, was created Viscount Aboyne, with special remainder to his second son James."

His execution was ordered by the Scots Parliament in Edinburgh. 1

1. Created: Knight of the Order of the Bath, 1610. 2

2. Admitted: member of the Privy Council, January 1616. 2

3. Admitted: to Cabinet government, 1 April 1622. 2

4. Went: as commander of Scots men-at-arms, serving with distinction, 1623, to France. 2

5. Created: Viscount Aboyne, on death of his brother John, October 1630. 2

6. Returned, 1637, from France. 2

7. Detained then released, 1639, in Edinburgh. 2

8. Returns: to support Montrose as Royalist, 1643, from England to Scotland. 2

9. Taken prisoner: by Menzies, December 1646, at Delnabo, Strathavon, Banffshire, Scotland. 2

10. Imprisoned: for sixteen months, 1647, in Tolbooth in Edinburgh. 2

11. Tried and condemned to death, 16 March 1649. 2


George married Anne CAMPBELL, daughter of Archibald CAMPBELL 7th Earl of Argyll and Agnes DOUGLAS, February 1607(contract).1 2 (Anne CAMPBELL was born in 1594,1 died on 14 June 1638 in Old Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Scotland 1 2 and was buried in 1608 in St Machar's Cathedral, Aberdeen, Scotland 2.)


  Marriage Notes:

"Anne (Campbell), born 1594, married in 1607 to George, second Marquess of Huntly, and had issue; and died at Aberdeen, 14 June 1638. Her husband was beheaded at the Market Cross of Edinburgh 22 March 1659 (see Note below)."

"The Marquess (George Gordon) married (contract February 1607) Anne, second daughter of Archibald, seventh Earl of Argyll, in a vain endeavour to heal a family feud. They had a charter of Badenoch 25 October 1608. She died at Old Aberdeen 14 June 1638, and was buried in St. Machar's Cathedral. By her the Marquess had issue"
