GORDON, George, Lord 1 2
User ID: P403. General Notes: "George (Gordon), Lord Gordon. He served in Alsace and Lorraine under Marechal de la Force. On returning home he was imprisoned with his father in 1639. Afterwards Argyll induced him to side with the Covenanters, but after Inverlochy he threw himself heart and soul into the royal cause. He joined Montrose, and rose to a high place in his esteem. He was a brave, chivalrous, and popular young man, and when he met his death in a fierce charge at the battle of Alford, 2 July 1645, he was universally lamented. His body was embalmed, escorted by Montrose to Aberdeen, and buried beside that of his mother in St. Machar's. Montrose acted as chief mourner, 'and indeed there was reason for it, for never two of such short acquaintance did ever love more dearlie . . . after the funeral obsequies ware ended, there were many that wreitt his praises.'
