Cause of his death was revenge killing.1 User ID: M757. General Notes: "HUGH, fourth Earl of Eglintoun, born in 1563. In 1573, he, with consent of his father, granted special favours to Sir John Mure of Caldwell, in consideration of the attachment of his family to that of Eglintoun. He succeeded his father on 3 June 1585, but fell a victim to the determined vengeance of the Cunninghams on 18 April 1586. The long-continued feud between the families has already been referred to, and about March 1586 the Earl of Glencairn and his friends resolved to revenge their ' injuries ' by the murder of the young Earl, which they effected by taking him unawares and ill-attended." Hugh married Egidia or Giles BOYD, daughter of Robert BOYD 5th Lord Boyd and Margaret COLQUHOUN, 20 May 1576(contract).1 (Egidia or Giles BOYD was born about 1562.) Marriage Notes: "He (Hugh Montgomerie) was twice married, first (contract dated 13, 16 and 20 May 1576) to Egidia or Giles, daughter of Robert, Lord Boyd. They were both under age, and provision was made for the management of their household and income until the Master attained the age of seventeen, in 1580." Hugh next married Helen KENNEDY, daughter of Thomas KENNEDY of Bargany and Agnes MONTGOMERIE.1 (Helen KENNEDY was born about 1565.) Marriage Notes: "He (Hugh Montgomerie) was twice married .... When his first wife died is not certain, but he married, secondly, Helen, daughter of Thomas Kennedy of Bargany." |
