"JOHN MAITLAND, of whom nothing certain is known beyond the fact that, on 18 August 1464, he was his
father's heir-apparent. He does not appear to have succeeded to any part of the family estates, and it may accordingly be presumed that he predeceased his father. Nothing is known as to his marriage, but he must have been the father of William Maitland who carried on the succession, and it seems probable that his wife was a lady of the family of Dundas."
