In her death certificate of 1876 Agnes, John's wife, was recorded as "Agnes Gartshore Married to John Gartshore Cotton Weaver". As John Gartshore, widower who was present where his wife's death occurred, he gave notice of her death before the registrar at Kirkintilloch on 4 February 1876.
In his daughter Margaret's marriage certificate of 1880, John Gartshore was recorded as a cotton weaver.

John Gartshore was recorded as a "Muslim Weaver (Decd.)" in the death certificate of his son David in Kilmarnock Infirmary in September 1881.
