When David Gartshore died in 1881 his death certificate recorded him as "Shovel Maker married to Margaret Graham". His age was recorded as 39 years and his usual address as Townholm, Kilmarnock. Both of his parents were deceased.

In his daughter's death certificate of 1896 David was recorded as a "Shovel Finisher". ^{2 3}
