In his death certificate of 1857 Alexander Gartshore was recorded as a cotton weaver and a widower, and aged 73 years. Alexander's father was recorded as deceased and his mother has no such note, but since she was born in 1742 she must have been.

When his son James married in 1858, the certificate recorded Alexander Gartshore as "Weaver Deceased".

In the 1881 death certificate of his son John, Alexander was recorded as a cotton weaver, and deceased. ^{2 4 5 6}

James Gartshore, Alexander's son who was present where his father died, gave notice of his father's death before the registrar at Kirkintilloch on 4 May 1857. ⁶

Alexander married Janet STIRLING, daughter of William STIRLING and Margaret CARRICK. (Janet STIRLING was born about 1785 in Kirkintilloch parish, Dunbartonshire, Scotland,^{4 8} died on 14 September 1856 in Waterside, Kirkintilloch parish, Dunbartonshire, Scotland ⁸ and was buried in 1856 in Old Aisle cemetery, Kirkintilloch, Dunbartonshire, Scotland ⁸.). The cause of her death was diarrhoea and action of nature.⁶
