  General Notes:

Janet was baptised 'Jean Low' in 1799, the daughter of her father's second wife Mary Lakie.

Janet Winton was recorded by the 1841 census living in Dean Village with her husband and their five children. Janet was placed in the 30-34 years age group, and had been born in Scotland, outside of Midlothian.

In 1851, Janet Winton was living with her husband and four children, aged between 5 and 16 years, at 3 Milne's Court, Lawn Market, in Edinburgh. The census recorded her as 46 years of age and born in 'Cupar of Angus' Perthshire.

The 1861 census for the St George district of the parish of Edinburgh, New Greyfriars, recorded Janet Winton living at 145 Grassmarket with her husband and two daughters . She was recorded as 56 years of age, and had been born in Perth. She worked as a sempstress.

Janet Winton died in 1884 at the recorded age of 80 years. Her death certificate recorded her as the widow of Alexander Winton, tailor. Her parents were deceased. 1 2 4 6 7

M. H. C. Irving LRCP&S Ed. certified the cause of death.

George Hutton, assistant governor, gave notice of Janet's death before the registrar, James Russell, at Colinton on 17 October 1884. 4


Janet married Alexander WINTON, son of Alexander WINTON and Janet GUILD, on 1 November 1822 in Perth, Perthshire, Scotland. (Alexander WINTON was born on 23 August 1800 in Edinburgh, Scotland 8, baptised on 23 August 1800 in Edinburgh, Scotland 8 and died 8 January 1867 at 5pm in Baxter's Close, Lawnmarket, Edinburgh, Scotland.). The cause of his death was compression of brain caused by a fall over 8 days.4
