The 1851 census for Edinburgh, Tolbooth, recorded George Winton living with his family at 3 Milne's Court, Lawn Market. His age was noted as 16 years and his birthplace as Edinburgh. He worked as an apprentice painter. He was the eldest of the children recorded in the household at that time.
