  General Notes:

"Maxwell Garthshore was born at Kirkcudbright, capital of the county of that name, the 28th October, 1732. On both sides he was descended from antient and respectable families in Galloway. His mother's name was Barbara Gordon; his father was the Rev. George Garthshore, 50 years Minister in Kirkcudbright, and of whom it was the least distinction to have been born a gentleman. [He died the 24th January 1760, aged 72. He was the son of James Garthshore of that ilk; as noticed in the inscription on his monument.]"

"...Dr. Garthshore always felt and declared that, for any good qualities ascribed to him, he was indebted chiefly to the instruction and example of his father."

from An account of the life of Dr Garthshore

George Garthshore was recorded as the second son of his father, and aged 72 years when he died in 1760. As well as his more famous son, he had two daughters one of whom married according to one source (The Literary History of Galloway) 'Michael Falcon of Largs', but according to Gordons Under Arms she was called Nicolas and married William Gordon son of John Gordon of Largmore. The latter source names a child of the marriage just mentioned as Barbara (1739-1824), and records this Barbara as the woman who married Michael Falcon (1733-1811), R.N. in 1793. It also states that Dr George Gordon's father in law was Robert Gordon of Garrerie. The other daughter married the Reverend William Thomson of Workington. However the marriage records show Reverend William Thomson marrying "Nicolais Garthshore" in 1753 in Kirkcudbright, presumably a second marriage. 3 5 6 7

George married Barbara GORDON, daughter of Robert GORDON of Garrery and Unknown, on 10 April 1716 in Tongland parish, Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland.1 2 (Barbara GORDON was born about 1688 and died on 14 August 1774 8.)
