She is said by some to be the "only daughter" of William Maxwell but this is not the case.

Daughter married Reverend Dr James GARTSHORE of that Ilk, Minister at Tranent, Parson of Cardross, son of John GARTSHORE of that Ilk and Jean MUIRHEAD.¹ (Reverend Dr James GARTSHORE of that Ilk, Minister at Tranent, Parson of Cardross was born about 1628.)

"William Maxwell, descended from the Hills family .... marr. Elizabeth, daugli. of Alexander Murdoch of Cumloden, who survived him, and had with other issue ..... a daugh. (marr. James Gartshore, min. of Kilsyth)"
