"The lands between the southern banks of the Eye Water consisted of three estates: Gunsgreen, immediately opposite Eyemouth, and Netherbyres, once part of the larger lands of Flemington which stretched all the way to Lamberton. At the beginning of the 17th century Gunsgreen estate was possessed by Alexander Lauder of Gunsgreen, a great-great-grandson of Sir Robert Lauder of The Bass (d.1508). On 17 January 1629, Alexander Lauder of Gunsgreen, acting as bailie for Sir David Home of Wedderburn, gave a sasine to Andrew Gray in Eyemouth, of some land on the boundaries of Houndlaw and also in Eyemouth. The town's name comes from its location at the mouth of the Eye Water. "

"Throughout late 1628 and early 1629 suspects (of witchcraft) from Eyemouth, Ayton and Coldingham were dragged to the pit to await the arrival of a commission. This took some time to organise as permission had first to be sought from the Privy Council in Edinburgh. Eventually on 20 January 1629 Sir Patrick Home of Ayton, John Home of Rentoun and Alexander Lauder of Gunsgreen were given authorisation to preside over the trial."

"Charles A. B. Lawder states that he (Alexander Lauder) was married firstly to a Susanna Home who died about 1604 (see Note below). Certainly this appears to tie in with the details in the Privy Council hearing on 29th November 1610, when it heard a complaint by John Lauder, brother to George and Alexander Lauder, all sons of the late Captain Robert Lauder, against Alexander that he had failed to pay outstanding groundrents due (@ £43,13s,4d per annum) for several years preceding the death of his spouse Susanna Home. "Alexander (Lauder) is noted in various documents as 'of Gunsgreen' (near Eyemouth) and 'Portioner [landowner] of Coldingham', both in Berwickshire. A Caution with sureties of 1000 merks each was issued on 19th June,1607 by the Privy Council, against several of the Home family of Whiterig, Hutton and Lawfield, not to harm Alexander Lauder in Coldingham.[⁸The Registers of the Privy Council of Scotland vol.vii, Edinburgh, 1885.] A further entry date 21st December 1611 quoting the same parties indicates the feud was continuing.

A long contract detailing sales of feued properties is dated at Edinburgh, Broxmouth and Gunsgreen, 2nd and 3rd July and 8th September 1614, between Lady Anna Home, one of the two daughters and heiresses of the deceased George Home, Earl of Dunbar. Numerous other Home family relationships are also mentioned. Alexander Lauder, portioner of Coldingham, and Christian Clapperton his [second] spouse, are invested in the four husbandlands [104 acres] of Gunsgreen, part of the lands of Flemington (no.385). This was ratified by Sir George Home of Manderston, knight, on the 18th November 1618, Alexander Lauder noted as in possession (no.387).[⁹Historic Manuscripts Commission, Report on the Manuscripts of Colonel David Milne Home of Wedderburn Castle, N.B., London, 1902, pps:183-4.] There is an armorial seal of Alexander Lauder of Gunsgreen dated 1619. [....]
