" .... by a decreet of the Lords of Council and Session on the 28th March 1683, the lands of Thornton were, for £13,924, 14s. 8d., adjudged from Sir James Strachan, Bart., James Strachan, his eldest son, and Barbara Forbes, his spouse, in favour of Robert Forbes, styled ' of Ludquharn.' By Robert Forbes, the lands were, on the 5th August 1685, disponed to his son William, ' reserving to Mary Ramsay the usufruct of the said lands for her lifetime, and also reserving to James Strachan, junior, and Barbara Forbes, his spouse, the heritable right of the lands of New Thornton and other portions of the said estate.' With consent of Sir James Strachan, James, his son, and Barbara Forbes, spouse of the latter, the lands of Thornton were, in 1685-6, conveyed to James Forbes of Saach, to whom, on the 2d April 1694, they were confirmed by charter (Reg. Mag. Sig., lib. Ixx., 65 ; lib. Ix.xiii., 78 ; Waterton Family Papers)."

Robert married Margaret LINDSAY, daughter of Alexander LINDSAY of Menie and Williamston and Jean FRASER.¹ (Margaret LINDSAY was born about 1619.)

"Robert Forbes. second son of 'Merchant Willie,' 1st of Craigievar, is variously designed as of Newton, Disblair (which he only held for 7 years), and Ludquharn. He was tutor to his young nephew, the 2nd Baronet, who succeeded his father in 1648. Robert married Margaret, daughter of Alexander Lindsay of Meanie and Williamston, and had a son William, who succeeded, and a daughter Margaret, who married Thomas Fraser of Cairnbulg, son of Lord Fraser."

"The subsequent career of Lindsay, and its tragic close, are traceable amid the local records of the period. He does not seem to have retained, for any length of time, his lands of Birnes. In 1653, he is described as 'sometime of Birnes, now of Meany,' and ten years later is designed 'of Williamston '. This last-named acquisition cost him dear. A daughter, Margaret, had become the wife of Captain Robert Forbes, tutor of Craigievar ; and with him Lindsay appears to have engaged in various transactions of a money-lending character."
