AUCHINLECK, Elizabeth heiress of Glenbervie 1 3 4 5 6
General Notes: "Elizabeth Auchinleck, who was under age at her father's death with her ward being gifted by the King to William Douglas, son of Archibald, 5th Earl of Angus, on 29 September 1492.3[3 Douglas Charters. No. 131]. A claim to the lands of Glenbervie was put forward in her name in 1501, she being the heir of Geilis Melville, sistir of her grant dame of Elizabeth Melville but this became a protracted and complicated affair which took its toll on her grandfather and ultimately diminished the wealth of the family. Part of this litigation related to a claim of bastardy against her although this was settled by letters of legitimation being issued by the Commissariot of Glasgow on 22 October 1512.4[4 Douglas Charters. No. 181]. She m. William Douglas of Braidwood, (he was k. at the battle of Flodden, in September of 1513), and on 5 November 1520, she disponed her lands of Glenbervie and others to her eldest son Archibald, as part of her act of profession into Holy Orders at the chapel of St. John.5[5 Douglas Charters. No. 185]." Elizabeth married Sir William DOUGLAS of Braidwood, then 1st of Glenbervie, jure uxoris, son of Archibald DOUGLAS 5th Earl of Angus, 'Bell the Cat' and Elizabeth BOYD, in 1501.1 2 (Sir William DOUGLAS of Braidwood, then 1st of Glenbervie, jure uxoris was born about 1471 and died on 9 September 1513 in Battle of Flodden Field, Northumberland, England.) Marriage Notes: "Sir William Douglas of Glenbervie. The date of his birth is not known, but in 1492 he received a grant of the ward of the lands of the deceased James Auchinleck, late son and heir of Sir John Auchinleck of that Ilk, including the marriage of Elizabeth, daughter and heiress of James. In 1493 he had a charter of the lands of Grenane in Ayrshire, and again in 1509. In 1510 he received the lands of Braidwood in Lanarkshire. Sir William Douglas, who was knighted before 1511, was killed at Flodden. He married in 1501 Elizabeth Auchinleck, through whom he obtained the lands of Glenbervie. She survived him and took the veil in the convent of St. John near the Boroughmuir or common moor of Edinburgh. They had issue one son : Archibald Douglas of Glenbervie." |
