  General Notes:

The 1871 census for Edinburgh St Cuthbert's recorded Mary Sandilands living with her family at 6 Semple Street. Mary was recorded as 11 years of age and had been born in St Cuthbert's parish Edinburgh. She was a scholar.

Mary Reid was aged 21 and born in Edinburgh according to the 1881 census. She was living then with her husband James in her parents' household at 4 Semple Street. her age was noted as 21 years and her occupation as 'rubber worker'.

The informant at the time of James Sandilands' death in 1882 was his daughter, Mary Reid who had been present. She gave notice at Edinburgh before Angus Matheson, registrar, on 28 October 1882. 1 3 4


Mary married James REID, son of Alexander REID and Elizabeth SMITH, on 10 March 1881 in 36 Lauder Road, Edinburgh, Scotland. (James REID was born on 8 January 1855 in Ratho, Midlothian, Scotland 3.)


  Marriage Notes:

The marriage took place after the publication of banns according to the forms of the Free Church. The minister was John McEwan, minister of John Knox's Church. The witnesses were William Moncur and Ann Ross.

John Reid, a bachelor, was recorded as 27 years of age and resided at 21 Greenside Road Edinburgh. he worked as a vanman. His parents were deceased.

Mary Sandilands, also unmarried, was recorded as 21 years of age and lived at 4 Semple Street Edinburgh. She was a Rubber Factory worker.

The marriage was registered on March 14 1881 at Edinburgh, B. Paton being the signing registrar.
