  General Notes:

Alexander was aged 5 years when the 1841 census recorded him living with his family in High Street, St John's Haddington. His birthplace was in East Lothian.

The 1851 census for Haddington, East Lothian, recorded Alexander Haimes living at the home of his parents in the High Street. He was recorded as 14 years of age and born in Haddington. He worked as a shoemaker.

In 1861 the census for Haddington recorded Alexander Haimes living in his parents' home. He was 22 years of age and his birthplace as Haddington. He worked as a shoemaker.

In 1891 the census found Alexander Haimes, head of the household, aged 53 years and born in Haddington, living at 39 Niddry Street, Edinburgh, with his wife Mary, his two children, George and Ellen, and his two nieces, Mary and Rebecca. Alexander was a shoemaker by trade and lived in the Canongate district, in the civil parish of Edinburgh Iron Church. Mary and Rebecca were the daughters of Alexander's brother, Richard.

Alexander Haimes' death certificate of 1906 recorded him as a shoemaker married to Mary Penman. His recorded age at death was 68 years. Both of his parents were deceased. 2 4 5 6

James H. Smith, Assistant Governor of the Poorhouse, gave notice of Alexander's death before the registrar, D. Shankie, on 20 April 1906. 2


Alexander married Mary PENMAN, daughter of William PENMAN and Helen WILSON, on 31 December 1863 in Edinburgh parish, Edinburgh, Scotland.1 (Mary PENMAN was born in 1838 in Edinburgh, Scotland 6 and died in 1931 2.)
