The 1851 census for Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, recorded William Garven as head of a household living at Mitchel's Land, Dean Street. William was 26 years of age and had been born in Kilmarnock. He worked as an engine keeper (calico). With him lived his wife, Margaret, and two young daughters, Jane aged 4 years, and Mary aged 2 years.

In 1871 the Garven family was recorded by the UK census living at 21 Dean Street in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire. The family consisted of William Garven, head of the household, his wife and their five children. William was recorded as a pit engine keeper. He was 46 years old and had been born in Kilmarnock.

William Garven was an engine keeper according to the marriage certificate of his son, William, in 1875.

The 1881 census for Kilmarnock recorded William Garven as head of a household living at 21 Dean Street. Along with himself and his wife lived his son and daughter, and a granddaughter, Margaret Johnstone, aged 10 years, born in Partick, Glasgow. William worked as an engine keeper. He was recorded as 56 years of age and born in Kilmarnock.

In the 1891 census for Kilmarnock William Garven was recorded as head of the household living at 21 Dean Street. William was recorded as 68 years of age and born in Kilmarnock. He worked as a sawyer's labourer. With him lived two 'Margrets', his wife and his daughter.

William Garven, widower, was the informant of his wife's death in Kilmarnock in 1894.

William Garven's age at death in 1900 was recorded as 72 years. His occupation was that of engine keeper. His parents' names were not entered. 3 4 5 6 7 8

Robert Garven, son of the deceased man, of 13 Woodstock Place, gave notice of his father's death. 6


William married Margaret MITCHELL, daughter of James MITCHELL and Mary DUNLOP, November-December 1846 in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Scotland.1 2 (Margaret MITCHELL was born on 17 March 1820 in Kilmarnock Parish, Ayrshire, Scotland 1 4 5 8 and died 24 March 1894 at 4.30 pm in 21 Dean Street, Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Scotland 4 8 9.). The cause of her death was cancer of the stomach over 3 years.6
