In 1871 the Garven family was recorded by the UK census living at 21 Dean Street in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire. The family consisted of William Garven, head of the household, his wife and their five children. Mary, the eldest daughter and third eldest child listed in the entry, was recorded as 14 years old and had been born in Kilmaurs, Ayrshire. She worked as a bonnet liner. ³

Mary married Archibald JOHNSTON on 31 December 1874 in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Scotland.¹ (Archibald JOHNSTON was born about 1845.)
