In 1871 the Garven family was recorded by the UK census living at 21 Dean Street in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire. The family consisted of William Garven, head of the household, his wife and their five children. Robert, the youngest child listed in the entry, was recorded as 11 years old and had been born in Kilmaurs, Ayrshire. He was a scholar.


Robert Garven was recorded by the 1881 census for Kilmarnock living with his parents. He was aged 21 years and had been born in Kilmaurs parish. He was a journeyman plumber by trade.


Robert Garven, son of the deceased man, of 13 Woodstock Place, gave notice of his father's death in Kilmarnock in 1900. ^{3 4}
