The US census entry in 1880 recorded Louis aged 3 years, living with his parents and younger brother in District 3 of Vancouver in Clark County in the State of Washington. Louis had been born in Washington State.
There are documents referring to Elmer Lewis Damphoffer or Danfifer which in all likelihood refer to the same person as the child noted above. Called after his father, he may have always been known by his second name to distingusih the older and younger man. The ages and dates support this. Before World War I the U.S. City Directories record L Elmer Damphoffer residing in Seattle and working as a waiter and later in Portland Oregon working as a cook.
According to his World War I draft card Elmer had brown eyes and dark hair, was of medium height and build, and was a cook.
In the 1920 US census Elmer was living in Union Street, Los Angeles california, with his wife and three children. He was a cook. 1 2 4 5
