John George was recorded living with his family in the parish of Kilmaurs, Ayrshire, where he was born, by the 1871 census. He was aged 4 years.

The 1881 census for the village of Whitlett, in the parish of St Quivox, Ayrshire, recorded the widowed James George, living at Blackhouse Crescent with his five sons and two daughters. John George, was the second eldest of the sons. He was 14 years of age and worked as a telegraph clerk. His birthplace was Kilmaurs, Ayrshire.
