  General Notes:

Samuel was 4 years old in the 1861 census entry.

The 1871 census for Kilmaurs recorded Samuel George living in his family home at Elderslie. He was 14 years of age and worked as a coal pit draw boy. Kilmaurs was his birthplace.

In 1877 Samuel's mother died and he was the informant of her death before the registrar at Tarbolton. He had not been present at the place where she died.

When his son James was born in 1881, Samuel, who was the informant of the child's birth, was recorded, by occupation, as a pointsman on the railway.

Samuel went to Australia and spent the rest of his life there. This is an newspaper obituary published in the George/Lindsay Family Tree in Ancestry.co.uk. From internal evidence it appears to have been printed in 1941 in a local paper:

"MR SAMUEL GEORGE

The death occurred at Gladstone recently of Mr Samuel George, who was well known and highly respected in Rockhampton, where he had lived for many years prior to his departure for Gladstone in 1933. Mr George was born in Ayrshire, Scotland. he came to this country more than 60 years ago by the Scottish Knight. he joined the Railway Department, and was well known in the Central District, having been a guard for 42 years. During this period he was guard on the Emu Park line for 18 years. He was retired from the Railway Department in 1924. Mr and Mrs George celebrated their golden wedding at Gladstone last August, having been married at Emu Park on August 13 1890.

Surviving members of the family are the widow, Mrs George, who is 77 years of age, Miss George, Mr Frederick George, engine driver, of Gladstone, and Mr Wilfred George, of Howard Smith Limited, of Rockhampton, and a grandson, Mr Nevill George, who has joined the Australian Navy." 1 6 7 8

Samuel married Margaret McKenzie HUNTER, daughter of John HUNTER and Margaret CUNNINGHAM, on 25 November 1880 in Whilletts, St Quivox, Ayrshire, Scotland.1 2 (Margaret McKenzie HUNTER was born on 11 December 1858 in Old Monkland Parish, Lanarkshire, Scotland 5.)


  Marriage Notes:

The marriage took place after banns according to the forms of the Church of Scotland. James Wilson, Minister of St Quivox, officiated. The witnesses were Agnes Paterson and Robt. Norrie.

Samuel George was a 23 year old bachelor living at Sandgate Street, Ayr. He worked as a railway signalman. His mother was deceased.

Margaret McKenzie Hunter was a single woman who worked as a domestic servant. She was aged 22 years and her address was Ayr Bank House, Catrine. Both of her parents were deceased.

The marriage was registered at St Quivox on 29 November 1880

Samuel next married Ellen LINTHWAITE on 13 August 1890 in Emu Park, Queensland, Australia.3 (Ellen LINTHWAITE was born in 1864 in England 6.)
