GEORGE, Margaret Hunter 1

  • Born: 1883, Queensland, Australia 2
  • Died: After 1954 2

  General Notes:

Margaret Hunter George is first listed in the Electoral Roll of Queensland, Australia in 1905. Her residence then was Emu Park. Since voting was extended only to those who were 21 years and over from 1905, this must mean that Margaret was born at least by1884. Her sister Jane was born in July 1884, so Margaret was probably born in 1883. This fits with the birth and death of her brother, James.

The Electoral Rolls reveal the residences and moves of Margaret's life:
1905 Emu Park
1908-1919 Rockhampton
1925-1930 Fitzroy
1936-1954 Gladstone
All of these were in the Capricornia district of the state of Queensland. 2 3 4

  Research Notes:

WOMEN'S SUFFRAGE

Before 1901, Australia was a continent made up of six separate colonies. Each colony had its own parliament, its own army, and its own flag.

In 1901, the six separate British colonies were joined together to form a federation called the Commonwealth of Australia. As a unified nation under the Constitution of Australia, the colonies became States that retained their own governments and a new federal government was also formed.

Federation proved to work in favour of women's suffrage. After the Franchise Act of 1902 was passed, women could stand for parliament in federal elections and vote at a federal level. In 1908, Victoria became the last State of Australia to permit women to vote. Women in Britain were not entitled to the same equality until 1928.
