  General Notes:

In the birth certificate of his son, Neil, in 1861 John Pheely [sic] was the informant of his son's birth. He gave notice of the birth on 30 September 1861 before William Duff, registrar, at Auchtergaven, Perthshire and made his X mark. John's occupation was recorded as field labourer.

The 1871 census for Lesmahagow recorded John Feelly aged 30 years living there with his wife and four children.

In 1874 John was widowed. He was present where the death of his wife occurred, and was the informant of his wife's death before the registrar at Lesmahagow, making his X mark. Her death certificate recorded him as a China Merchant, as did the 1890 marriage certificate of his daughter Elizabeth McPhail [sic].

When his daughter Elizabeth died in 1928, John was recorded in her death certificate as "John McPhail China Merchant (Deceased)". 1 3 4 6 7 8


John married Helen McALLISTER, daughter of Neil McALLISTER and Elizabeth STEWART, on 9 August 1861 in St Alphonsus RC Chapel, Calton, Glasgow, Scotland.1 2 (Helen McALLISTER was born in 1840 2 3 and died 11 January 1874 at 3.11 pm in Abbey Green, Lesmahagow, Lanarkshire, Scotland 8.). The cause of her death was enteritis over 14 days.


  Marriage Notes:

The marriage was celebrated after banns according to the rites and forms of the Roman Catholic Church. The celebrant was Jeremiah Buckley, and the witnesses were Ann Brannon and Mary Newlands.

John Pheeley, who made his X mark, was an unmarried man aged 21 years. By occupation he was a hawker. His address was noted as 27 Gallowgate Glasgow. His mother was deceased.

Ellen McAlister was also unmarried and resident at 27 Gallowgate Glasgow. Her age was recorded as 19 years. She made her X mark.

The marriage was registered on 9 August 1861 at Glasgow, William Blackwood being the signing registrar. 2
