Duncan was christened Dennis, possibly to conform with the Roman Catholic tradition of giving saints' names at baptism. Reverend Alex Smith baptised him, and his baptismal sponsors were James Brannan and Agnes McKillop.

Duncan was recorded in the 1851 census at his grandmother's home in Chapelyhill, in the village of Hurlford, parish of Riccarton, Ayrshire. He was aged 4 years. His grandmother, recorded as "Mrs Sweedley", two uncles Thomas and Michael, lived there. His mother, sister and brother were also recorded.

"Duncan McKellop" was recorded in the 1861 census living in Airdrie with his parents and family. He was an iron moulder, aged 14 years.

In 1871, Peter and Isabella McKillop were living with their five children: Duncan, aged 24 years, John, 22 years, Peter, 18 years, Margaret, 16 years, and Arthur, 12 years, at 51 Bell Street, Airdrie. Catherine Quigley, aged 71 years, Peter's mother-in-law, also lived there. All were born in Airdrie, except Catherine and Isabella who were recorded as having been born in Paisley. Duncan was recorded as aged 24 years and employed as an 'iron moulder'.

It was Duncan who notified the registrar in Glasgow of his father's death in 1875.

In his mother's Application for Poor Relief in 1886, he was recorded as "Duncan 39, single, Moulder, residence unknown".

In his death certificate of 1905 Duncan McKillop was recorded as a single man of 73 years at the time of death. He was an iron moulder. Both of his parents were deceased. 1 2 3 5 6
