In 1841 Agnes was recorded by the census for Abbey Parish, Paisley, living at East Buchanan Street, in the home of Mrs Catherine G. Gordon, a woman of independent means. Agnes was aged 29 years, and had been born in Renfrewshire.

The 1851 census recorded Agnes living with her two children in the east end of Glasgow in 18 Saltmarker Street. She was 38 years old. With them lived Edward Downie, her nephew, a cloth capper and hot pressor, aged 25 years and born in Paisley.

PARISH RELIEF APPLICATION 1851
A Parish Relief application was first made by 'Widow James Quigley', Agnes Downie, on 13 March 1851. She was 38 years old and gave her address as 18 Saltmarket Glasgow. She had married in Paisley and her husband had died of fever the previous January in Glasgow. She had two children living with her: John, aged 8 years, born at 6 Buchanan Street, Abbey parish and Agnes, 6 years old, born in Macausland's Land, Crown Point, Calton, Glasgow.

Her husband was born in Belfast and she was born in Simsland (?), Moss Street, Paisley. He was a teacher and latterly a Sherriff Officer [sic]. She was applying for her children all of whom were healthy. Her husband was a teacher in the Roman Catholic school in Paisley for ten years prior to 1843. Her parents were Edward Downie and Agnes Drapes [sic], both dead. She could read and write. She had never been chargeable before.

Her brothers Edward Downie and ( ) Downie were residents in Paisley and they recollected applicant's birth in Moss Street, Paisley, and can swear that she was born there. Quigley's parents, it appeared, left Glasgow and went to Belfast 3 weeks before the birth of the applicant's deceased husband and continued there for 3 years when they again removed to Scotland.


APPLICATION FOR PARISH RELIEF 1853
A second Parish Relief application was made by 'Widow James Quigley', Agnes Downie on 28 October 1853. Her address was 41 Wellmeadow Street, Paisley. She had been married in Paisley by Mr Bremner in October 1838. Her husband was a teacher who had died in Saltmarket, Glasgow in January 1851.

She had a son, John, 10 years of age, born in East Buchanan Street in Abbey parish, and a daughter Agnes, aged 8 years, born in Mile End in Barony parish, Glasgow. She herself was born in Moss Street, Paisley and her husband was born in Belfast. She was aged 42 years, and worked as a sewer to Mr Thorp, a wheeling merlin (?)

Her own health and that of her children was very good; having two children under age was the problem for her. As far as earnings went, John got employment in Stewart's paper reading shop for 2/- and her own earnings came to 4/-

As for parents, James Quigley was dead and Mary Duncan alive, Edward Downie and Agnes Dripps were dead. She had no other children. She could read. She was of the church of Rome, a member. She was chargeable to the city of Glasgow and Barony on account of her children since her husband died.

Agnes applied to the City soon after her husband died and got relief for four months. After this she was referred to Abbey parish for John and to the Barony parish for Agnes. She got nothing after for John except that Abbey offered to receive him into the Poorhouse. From Barony she received 4/- per month which she received till (unclear) when she got nothing and received a letter from the City inspector whom she did not then see and on calling today was refused in respect that she lived in Paisley.

The 1871 census for Abbey Paisley recorded Agnes Quigley, aged 58 years, living at 2 Garthland Lane with her son John, aged 29 years, and her daughter Agnes, aged 23 years. She had been born in Paisley and was a seamstress. A visitor, John Leary, born in Devonshire, also lived there.

Agnes Quigley died in 1875. Her death certificate recorded her as the widow of James Quigley schoolmaster, and her age as 55 years (on the low side certainly). Both of her parents were already deceased. ^{1 2 4 5 6 7 8}

Agnes Quigley, daughter of the deceased who had been present where the death occurred, gave notice of her mother's death before the registrar at Paisley, R. Waterston, on 3 November 1875. ⁴

Agnes married James QUIGLY, son of James QUIGLY and Mary Magdalane DUNCAN, on 26 October 1838 in St Mirin's RC Chapel, Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland. (James QUIGLY was born in 1812 in Belfast, County Antrim, Ireland ⁹ and died in January 1851 in 18 Saltmarket, Glasgow, Scotland.). The cause of his death was fever.

  Marriage Notes:

The banns of marriage were recorded as having taken place at Paisley Middle parish on 7 October 1838.

In her parish relief application of 1853, Agnes Downie stated that she and her husband James Quigley had been married in Paisley by Mr Bremner in October 1838.
